Originally built in 1696 by the Duke of Argyll, Old Kilmun House was the home to James Duncan (founder of Benmore Botanic Garden) in the nineteenth century. For its unusual layout and early date, Old Kilmun House is of special interest and as such has been granted Category A listed status by Historic Scotland.

Old Kilmun House is unusual architecturally because of its six bay windows layout. For its unusual layout and early date, Old Kilmun House has been granted Category A listed status by Historic Scotland.
